Top 15 Resorts-Arizona 2024/2025

Dove Mountain–Ritz-Carlton, Manana

If you have yet to experience desert golf, now is the time to start making some plans for AZ. In early February the temperature in Phoenix starts hitting the low 70’s, and continues to climb through the 80’s in March and April—generally cracking 90 sometime in early May.

Our Top 15 Arizona Golf resorts are below, listed by GolfDay Rating. We’ve included links to the Resort Website, as well as direct links for course description and accommodations. We have also provided current USGA course and slope ratings, course architect(s), a practice facility overview, and a link to Google Map and Directions for each location.

We-Ko-Pa in Fort McDowell is No.1, with two fantastic eighteen-hole layouts (Cholla, designed by Scott Miller and Seguaro, by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw)

Jack Nicklaus: La Paloma and Dove Mountain

Ventana Canyon was a very close second with a pair of terrific Tom Fazio deigns, and Jack Nicklaus laid out two of our top 10 (No. 5 La Paloma and No. 7 Dove Mountain).

Top 25 Public Courses-Arizona 2024/2025

Grayhawk: Raptor Course, Scottsdale AZ

Arizona has quite a few fantastic Golf Resorts, including We-Ko-Pa, Ventana Canyon, Troon North and AK-Chin Southern Dunes, but there are plenty of terrific daily fee public courses as well should you want to plan a winter get away that doesn’t crush the wallet.

You always want to look for a good deal, but its key to find one at a solid track so you don’t end up wasting a precious day on the links–and now is the time to begin planning because Phoenix temps have begun pushing into the 70’s and will continue north through February.

For a head start on that, we’ve compiled a list of our 25 highest rated AZ public daily fee courses—with details including a link to the course website and google maps for location and directions.

Arizona native Gary Panks designed 5 of our Top-25, including The Talon course at Grayhawk (#4), Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia (No. 8), The Legacy Golf club (No. 12), and Raven Golf Club in Phoenix (No. 17).

The first family of golf course architecture, Robert Trent Jones, RTJ II and Rees Jones, also made substantial contributions to Arizona public golf including #2 Quintero (Rees Jones), #3 Las Sendas (RTJ II), and The Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona (original Robert Trent Jones with RTJ II renovations).

Robert Trent Jones II also designed Arizona National (#11) and Dove Valley Ranch (#19).

Jack Nicklaus (#10–The Golf Club at Estrella) and Tom Fazio (#4–Raptor at Grayhawk) contributed a pair of desert masterpieces as well.

Most everyone has heard about great Florida golf resorts like Streamsong, TPC Sawgrass and PGA Village, but there are a whole lot of terrific public courses that are not part of a resort property.

If you’re looking for great Florida golf without breaking the bank at a high-end resort, take a look at the Top 40 Public courses below, and start planning a get-away–keeping in mind that there are plenty of nice hotels and restaurants to choose from throughout Florida (and GolfDay course pages include a link to Google maps with directions to every course).

While each of the Top 40 has a GolfDay Rating above 90, Florida offers 122 independent public courses with a rating of 85 or higher (premium) and 235 with a rating of 80 or above (very good).

Jack: 5 Designs in the Top 40

Jack Nicklaus leads the list for premier public course design in Florida with original design or updates at 5 of the top 40 public courses, including Old Corkscrew (#2) and Webb’s Reserve (#18), his latest design in Punta Gorda.

Tom Fazio: Top 40 Public

Pelican Hill: Two Fantastic Tom Fazio Designs

Tom Fazio has no peer among modern-day golf course architects when you consider the number of his designs that have received national recognition over a 50 plus year career. Currently, 14 courses originally designed or remodeled by Tom are included in the Golf Digest Top 100 courses in the U.S, and 30 are among the Top 200—by far the most of any course designer.

Shadow Creek: Golf Digest Top 100 Public/#5

Golf was in his blood from an early age, with uncle George Fazio a successful PGA Tour pro in the 1940’s and 50’s. Tom grew up just outside of Philadelphia in Montgomery County, home to iconic Merion Golf Club (and where George finished 3rd in the 1950 U.S. Open behind Ben Hogan).

Tom Fazio: Most Highly Acclaimed Modern Architect

When George Fazio became the first tour pro to try his hand at golf course architecture in the early 60’s, Tom soon joined his firm and gathered hands-on experience as well as intimate knowledge of course construction and architecture. By the early 70’s, Tom had become a full partner in the firm and his career began its meteoric rise.

Pine Valley, NJ: Golf Digest #1—Renovations by Tom Fazio

In addition to his award-winning private club designs, 10 Tom Fazio courses are among the Golf Digest Public Top 100, and award-winning Fazio courses are found in just about every region of the country—from Red Sky Ranch in the mountains of Colorado to Pelican Hill on the Pacific coast and Sea Island Resort in Georgia.

Jack Nicklaus: Top 40 Public Courses

Harbor Shores, Benton Harbor MI

Jack Nicklaus is generally considered the greatest golfer of all-time because no player has come anywhere near his performance in the major championships, but what really separated Jack was his consistency.  When Jack shifted his focus to include golf course architecture in the late 60’s, the consistent excellence that personified Nicklaus on the PGA Tour soon became apparent in his course designs—beginning when he collaborated with Pete Dye to create Harbour Town Golf Links in 1970. In 1976 Jack designed Shoal Creek, which shortly thereafter hosted the 1984 PGA Championship, won by Lee Trevino.

Harbour Town Golf Links, SC

While Pete Dye and Tom Fazio receive much of the acclaim for modern golf course architecture, Nicklaus designs often fly under the radar—but rest assured that when Jack puts his name on a course, it is virtually guaranteed to be a first-class venue requiring thought and precision.

Jack Nicklaus

Everyone is familiar with Muirfield Village and The Memorial, Jack’s masterpiece and legacy, but keep in mind as well that 86 of the roughly 200 courses in the U.S. with Nicklaus original design or renovation are open to public play, and 53 of them received a GolfDay Rating of 90 or higher (Jack Nicklaus Public Courses).

Manele Golf Course, HI

7 of Jack’s designs are among the Golf Digest Top 100 Public Courses in the US, and 14 are included in the Golf Digest’s Top 200 courses. Top public courses with Nicklaus design can be found just about everywhere in the country, from Hawaii to the East Coast.

Our Top 40 public venues featuring Jack Nicklaus design include 22 states, with South Carolina and California at the top with 4 each, followed by Michigan, Georgia, Ohio, and Virginia—each with 3.

If you are looking for great public golf, or planning a vacation, the GolfDay Search Engine makes it easy to find the best courses and a better bang for your buck.

Pete Dye: Top 40 Public Courses

Whistling Straits, WI

Pete Dye first became well known when he collaborated with Jack Nicklaus to design Harbour Town Golf Links at The Sea Pines Resort in 1969–the iconic venue for the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage. In the 1970’s, Dye crafted a great many wonderful courses, including The Cardinal in North Carolina and The River Course at Kingsmill Resort in Virginia (both in 1974).

Harbour Town Golf Links, SC

TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, however, was the work that launched Pete Dye into the stratosphere of golf course architecture. Dean Beaman, former commissioner of the PGA Tour, had conceived the Tournament Players Championship in 1974 as the Tour’s flagship event, and it gained notoriety through the decade with powerful fields as Jack Nicklaus, greatest player in the world, won 3 of the first 5.

TPC Sawgrass, FL

Beaman wanted to elevate the tournament still further however, and to do that he needed a permanent venue that could stand with the four majors and support world class golf at the very highest level—so he turned to Pete Dye.

Not only did he want a course that would be a very stiff test for the world’s greatest players, he also wanted breathtaking visual appeal for a growing television market, as well as viewing areas that would maximize the experience for fans—a “stadium course.”

Pete Dye

Dye delivered precisely what Dean Beaman envisioned, incorporating risk and reward throughout the layout to build excitement and drama, creating a canvas to capture a multitude of memorable moments that would live on in history and become “The Players.”

Ocean Course, Kiawah Island, SC

In addition to his masterpiece at TPC Sawgrass, Pete Dye designs have become the backbone of the PGA Championship rotation beginning with Crooked Stick in 1991, as well as Whistling Straits, Kohler WI in 2004 and 2015, and the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, SC in 2012 and 2021).

Pete Dye designed well over 100 courses throughout his illustrious career, and more than half of them are open to public play (Pete Dye-Public).

If you are looking for great public golf, or planning a vacation, the GolfDay Search Engine makes it easy to find the best courses and a better bang for your buck.

Toughest Courses: U.S. Resorts Top 30

French Lick Resort; Dye Course, IN

If you are a scratch player determined to challenge your game on the hardest golf courses open to public play, perhaps the best place to start is at a resort—and we have assembled the toughest 30 resort courses in the country based on USGA course rating from the tips.

Not surprisingly, Pete Dye crafted seven of them—including #1 (Dye Course at French Lick), #2 (Harbour Town with Jack Nicklaus at Sea Pines), and #3 (The Ocean Course at Kiawah).

Nicklaus, renowned for designing a stiff test of golf, laid out 4 of the 30—The Reserve at Moonlight Basin (#5), The Bear Course at Grand Traverse (#25), Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee (#28) as well as collaborating with Pete Dye at Harbour Town.

2 Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designs are among the thirty (Judge at Capitol Hill on the RTJ Golf Trail–#6 and Mauna Kea in Hawaii–#15) while Rees Jones contributed a pair (Blue Top Ridge–#13 and the North Course at Lake of Isles–#21).

Masters of difficulty: Pete Dye and Rees Jones

While these difficult resort tracks are spread throughout 22 states, Wisconsin boasts the greatest number with 4 (Straits course at Whistling Straits, River course at Blackwolf Run, Erin Hills, and Wild Rock at The Wilderness Resort). And by the way, these big boys are all part of the fantastic collection of courses to be found on Wisconsin Golf Trail as well.

When it’s time to start planning a golf trip, take a look at the GolfDay Top 250 Resorts; and for finding a great golf course where you are or where you’re going, the GolfDay Search Engine makes it easy to get a better bang for your buck.

Classic Courses: Donald Ross–Top 35 Public 2024

Bedford Springs Resort, PA

Donald Ross was by far the most prolific of the classic golf course architectural masters, having designed or remodeled more than 300 courses in the United States that are still open for play.

Many of the most famous courses designed by Ross are private, including Oak Hill, Seminole, and Oakland Hills, but there are 100 Donald Ross courses that are open to the public–starting with Pinehurst #2.

Pinehurst #2, Pinehurst Resort NC

Pinehurst #2, site of the 2024 U.S. Open, is perhaps the most famous Donald Ross design, having previously hosted the Open in 2014, 2005 and 1999 as well as the 2014 Women’s Open, 1936 PGA Championship and the 1951 Ryder Cup.

Donald Ross

Donald Ross also designed courses 1 and 3 at Pinehurst Resort, and a great many of his classic course designs were conceived in his home adjacent to #2, Dornoch Cottage, where Ross lived from 1925 until his death in 1948.

Dornoch Cottage, Pinehurst Resort

Ross left us with a wealth of wonderful golf courses, and we are fortunate indeed that so many are available for everyone to enjoy. We have selected our Top 35, but you can also spin through a comprehensive list of all public Donald Ross courses.

Since Donald Ross made his home in North Carolina, it is not a surprise that 11 of the Top 35 public Ross courses are located in NC. Florida is second with 4, followed by Ohio and New Hampshire with three each.

It is also notable that 11 of our Top 35 are Municipal courses, with Monroe Country Club (No. 10) and Mooresville Golf Club (No. 11) leading the list.

In addition to Pinehurst, premier golf resort locations with Donald Ross courses include French Lick in Indiana, Pine Needles (also in NC), and The Broadmoor in Colorado.

Should you wish to delve deeper into the life and work of this remarkable man, The Donald Ross Society is a fantastic resource.

And if you’re just looking for great public golf where you are or where you’re going, the GolfDay Search Engine makes it easy to find the best courses and a better bang for your buck.
