Pete Dye: Top 40 Public Courses

Whistling Straits, WI

Pete Dye first became well known when he collaborated with Jack Nicklaus to design Harbour Town Golf Links at The Sea Pines Resort in 1969–the iconic venue for the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage. In the 1970’s, Dye crafted a great many wonderful courses, including The Cardinal in North Carolina and The River Course at Kingsmill Resort in Virginia (both in 1974).

TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, however, was the work that launched Pete Dye into the stratosphere of golf course architecture. Dean Beaman, former commissioner of the PGA Tour, had conceived the Tournament Players Championship in 1974 as the Tour’s flagship event, and it gained notoriety through the decade with powerful fields as Jack Nicklaus, greatest player in the world, won 3 of the first 5.

TPC Sawgrass, FL

Beaman wanted to elevate the tournament still further however, and to do that he needed a permanent venue that could stand with the four majors and support world class golf at the very highest level—so he turned to Pete Dye.

Not only did he want a course that would be a very stiff test for the world’s greatest players, he also wanted breathtaking visual appeal for a growing television market, as well as viewing areas that would maximize the experience for fans—a “stadium course.”

Pete Dye

Dye delivered precisely what Dean Beaman envisioned, incorporating risk and reward throughout the layout to build excitement and drama, creating a canvas to capture a multitude of memorable moments that would live on in history and become “The Players.”

Ocean Course, Kiawah Island, SC

In addition to his masterpiece at TPC Sawgrass, Pete Dye designs have become the backbone of the PGA Championship rotation beginning with Crooked Stick in 1991, as well as Whistling Straits, Kohler WI in 2004 and 2015, and the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, SC in 2012 and 2021).

Pete Dye designed well over 100 courses throughout his illustrious career, and more than half of them are open to public play (Pete Dye-Public).
