Our list of the Top 100 public courses in the U.S. (below) does not include resorts, so Pebble Beach. Pinehurst, Bandon Dunes and other wonderful resort courses are not shown here (the GolfDay Top 100 Resorts<\/span><\/a> is published separately). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GolfDay Rating<\/strong> is based on a variety of criteria, including the stature of the architect who did the original design, updates that have been done since the course was built, USGA<\/span><\/a> Course and Slope Ratings, current local and national rankings by Golf Digest and Golfweek (as well as other authoritative sources), the quality and diversity of practice facilities, general course conditioning and current course reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California boasts the highest number on the list with 12 courses among the Top 100 (6 in the Top 50), while South Carolina is close behind with 8 courses in the Top 100 (3 in Top 50).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Carolina includes 6 courses in the Top 100 (4 in the Top 50), while Michigan, Indiana, Virginia and New York each have 5 public courses among the Top 100. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
