The GolfDay Rating<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is nothing worse than wasting a great day for golf on\na second-rate course. And a cheap price doesn\u2019t offer much consolation when you\nare on the second hole and realize that you\u2019ve invested the next four hours on\nmediocrity. A great track always starts with design, and while names like\nFlynn, Mackenzie, Tillinghast or Ross may not be familiar, your round is\nguaranteed to be more enjoyable if the course was laid out by a quality\narchitect. Conditioning and scenery are important as well, but the thought and\ncare that went into a course design will leave the most lasting impression.\nWhen I was young my father was a member of Gardner\u2019s Bay Country Club on\nShelter Island at the east end of Long Island, NY. I always loved playing that\ncourse, but never really knew why. I had heard Seth Raynor\u2019s name mentioned\nhere and there, but it meant nothing to me at the time. Years later when I\nunderstood who Raynor was and why his courses are considered among the finest\nin the world, the reason I found Gardner\u2019s Bay so much fun to play became\nclear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course rating given by GolfDay is based on a variety of\ncriteria, including local and national rankings by Golf Digest, Golfweek and\nLinks Magazine as well as USGA Course and Slope rating, general course\nconditioning and the scope and quality of practice facilities. But the most\nimportant aspect of rating any course is design, and we have given architecture\na great deal of consideration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
